- Increasing demand for concrete products and use of natural aggregates (NA) as one of the main components has raised a global concern in terms of environmental issues and sustainable development. In this sense, replacement of NA with recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) offering some benefits from the environment and economic perspectives including the reduction in the exploitation of natural quarries, diminishing the construction waste in the landfill and offsetting the expense of the concrete products. Recently, incorporation of RCA in concrete products particularly self-compacting concrete (SCC) has gained increasing interest. This review intends to highlight the existing knowledge and challenges regarding the application of RCA in SCC. For this purpose, the general characteristics of RCA are presented and the proposed treatment methods to improve the quality of RCA are explored. Moreover, a critical review of recent research studies about the influence of RCA replacement on the holistic performance of is presented. In particular, the effects of RCA on mix design, fresh and mechanical properties, durability properties and microstructure are discussed. Lastly, some recommendation and valuable ideas for similar studies in future are presented.
